Editorial standards & sources
BedtimeCalculation exists to translate sleep science into practical, accurate guidance you can act on tonight. Because sleep touches health, we hold our content to a clear standard. This page explains who writes it, how we research it, and how we keep it trustworthy.
Who writes our content
Articles and tool explanations are produced by the BedtimeCalculation Editorial Team, a small group focused on sleep health, behavioral science, and clear writing. Every piece is researched against primary sources and current clinical guidance before it is published, and the author and last-updated date appear at the top of each article so you always know how fresh it is.
How we choose sources
We prioritize high-quality, independent, and authoritative references over blogs or marketing content. Where we make a factual or health claim, we cite it. Our preferred sources include:
- National Sleep Foundation and its expert-consensus sleep-duration recommendations
- National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NIH/NHLBI)
- American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM) and the Sleep Education resource
- U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)
- Peer-reviewed research indexed in PubMed
You'll find a numbered Sources & references list at the bottom of our in-depth articles linking directly to the material we relied on.
How our tools work
Our calculators are built on published sleep science, not guesswork. Sleep runs in cycles of roughly 90 minutes, and the average adult takes about 14 minutes to fall asleep, so our sleep calculator counts whole 90-minute cycles and adds that onset time to find wake-friendly bedtimes. Cycle length shortens with age (closer to 82 minutes for adults 55+), and the calculator adjusts for that. The methodology is the same one used by major sleep organizations, and we document it openly rather than treating it as a black box.
Accuracy & corrections
Sleep science evolves, and so does this site. We review our cornerstone content periodically and update the "Updated" date when we make a substantive change. If you spot an error or something that's gone out of date, tell us and we'll fix it.
